Numerical Simulations of Light Scattering in Soft Anisotropic Fibrous Structures and Validation of a Novel Optical Setup from Fibrous Media Characterization

The insight of biological microstructures is at the basis understanding mechanical features and potential pathologies tissues, like blood vessels. Different techniques are available for this purpose, Small Angle Light Scattering (SALS) approach. SALS method has advantage being fast non-destructive, however investigation its physical principles still required. Within work, a numerical study irradiation soft fibrous tissues was carried out through in-silico simulations based on Monte Carlo approach to evaluate effect thickness specimen. Additionally, results were validated with an optical setup technique characterization samples dedicated tests four 3D-printed specimens different fibers architectures. revealed two main regions interest according (thk) analyzed media: Fraunhofer region (thk < 0.6 mm) Multiple > 1 mm). Semi-quantitative information about tissue anisotropy successfully gathered by analyzing scattered light spot. Moreover, remarkable coherence experimental data, both in terms mean orientation dispersion fibers.
